Scaling and root planing is a non-surgical approach used to treat gum disease. Our hygienists will carefully clean beneath the gumline to remove plaque and bacteria from periodontal pockets. Root planing smooths the tooth surfaces, making it harder for plaque and bacteria to build up again. Patients will benefit most from ongoing maintenance visits to keep their gums healthy.
In some cases, surgical treatment is needed to address gum disease and repair damage it has caused. Healthy gums fit snugly around your teeth, like a turtleneck around your neck. With gum disease, tissue and bone can be destroyed, forming pockets around the teeth where bacteria thrive. Deep pockets lead to further bone and tissue loss and may eventually cause tooth loss.
Pocket reduction surgery involves folding back the gum tissue, removing bacteria, and securing the gums back in place. In some cases, damaged bone is smoothed to eliminate hiding places for bacteria, helping gums reattach to healthy bone.
